Who are we?
a
terre des hommes is an international federation of national terre des hommes chapters. These chapters raise funds to support action and advocacy on behalf of children who have no means of defending themselves against poverty, oppression, abandonment or discrimination.
terre des hommes Germany, is one such chapter, initiated in 1967 at Stuttgart. It sees itself as a people's movement against injustice, especially the injustice faced by children. It believes in supporting children within their own social and cultural environment. It works in collaboration with concerned persons or authorities, with a deep sense of justice, respect and solidarity, without any reference to politics, gender, race, caste or religion.
terre des hommes Germany, is committed to empowering the child: ensuring survival, supporting the child in times of need, protecting the child from exploitation, actively promoting children's rights…visit our website www.tdh.de for more information.
Within Germany it seeks to inform and educate the public about the situation of children, women and other vulnerable and oppressed groups in developing countries.
In developing countries, it acts through local project partners empowering local people to find their own ways of fighting poverty, illiteracy, injustice and oppression. It is present through its project partners in around 30 countries of the world and has 4 regional offices in different parts of the world.
These offices are in:

Why this site?
a
The website is being launched by terre des hommes (Germany) India Programme. It is intended to eventually be an independent site. Contacts and discussions with other groups, institutions, organisations and individuals have already been initiated in order to make it a collective effort. It is hoped that in a short while the site will become a common project of these organisations.
terre des hommes (Germany) India Programme feels that children need to be on the human rights agenda. So far, they have not been considered as a separate group. They were mainly thought of as the property of their parents or as part of the family. But today the situation is different. The Convention on the Rights of the Child adopted by the international community (UN) in the beginning of the last decade has recognised the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of children. The underlining principle of the convention is 'the best interest of the child'. The Convention further states that the child's own opinion will be given due regard. The child is regarded as an individual with needs, which evolve with age and maturity.
This site therefore strives to defend and promote children's rights through all possible means.

What will this site do?
a
a It will provide a platform for children themselves to discuss their rights and to interact with each other, especially with those whose rights are constantly violated.
a The site will provide information about all international and national covenants and commitments on children.
a It would have updated information on cases of violations both in general and even individual cases.
a It will connect victimised or violated children with available services and remedial measures.
a The site will invite all those who strive in support of children's rights to be present and mutually interact.
a It will attract children through value-based games, chats, exercises and exchanges.
a It will present alternative and appropriate materials for children, and present the opportunities for children available on the Net. At the same time it will seek to protect them from risks, child pornography and abuse on the Net. As in real life, children's rights must also be defended and promoted on the Net.
