Education for All
The directive principles of the Constitution of India promised free compulsory education for all citizens of India upto to the age of 14 years immediately after independence within a period of 10 years. Unfortunately even after the golden jubilee of a free India, this could not be realized. In the wake of a lot of pressure from different sections of the population, the national government amended the constitution and made free compulsory education a fundamental right to all children 6 and 14 years of age in 2002. Subsequently, different versions of a bill were introduced to the national parliament by the previous and present governments. However, nothing has happened. The final draft of the right to education bill is now being circulated among the states of India as a model bill exhorting them to initiate state legislations for free and compulsory education. This is a clear instance of the Central Government abdicating its responsibility of guaranteeing the fundamental right.
The Right to Education cannot become a reality without a strong central legislation to support it. The fight for the Right to Free and Compulsory Education for many social and political organizations, NGO's, campaigns and networks are involved in this.
